Position Title: Senior Epidemiologist for Sexually Transmitted Disease

Overview
The CDC Foundation is hiring a full-time Senior Epidemiologist to support epidemiological work for the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program at the New Mexico Department of Health. Working under general supervision, this role involves planning and conducting epidemiologic investigations and supporting public health surveillance tailored to program and public information needs. The epidemiologist will analyze trends in reportable STD infections—including syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia—with special emphasis on congenital and early syphilis to help track disease patterns and advance statewide syphilis elimination efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field, with a concentration in Epidemiology or Biostatistics
• Two years of experience analyzing and interpreting infectious disease or similar surveillance data
• At least five years of relevant experience in epidemiology or a closely related field
• Strong skills in data management, analysis, and visualization
• Experience developing and monitoring performance indicators for infectious diseases and grants
• Experience with data visualization tools such as MS Power BI
• Proficiency in designing and conducting research and epidemiologic studies
• Experience using Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS)
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders with minimal supervision
• Ability to manage multiple complex projects with varying timelines and resources, while maintaining metadata and code repositories
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with partners across state agencies, CDC, and external organizations
• Proficiency with analytic software including SAS, SQL, and R
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare comprehensive analytical and statistical reports
Responsibilities
• Conducts advanced epidemiology, biostatistics, database design and management, and data visualization, producing written reports, presentations, and dashboards
• Collaborates effectively with teams of epidemiologists, program managers, physicians, data analysts, and other health professionals to design, implement, and evaluate disease prevention, investigation, surveillance, and control strategies
• Presents data to illustrate trends, probable causes, and risk factors for STDs
• Analyzes collected data and recommends prevention or control measures
• Plans and advises on the implementation of new or innovative surveillance, prevention, and treatment programs
• Works with database developers to improve system performance, automation, and data quality
• Conducts data quality activities, including deduplication, data cleaning, and addressing missing data
• Serves as a technical expert on reportable STDs and their prevention and control
• Provides training and technical assistance to program staff on STD epidemiology and control
• Reviews technical and non-technical work summaries, scientific reports, and manuscripts produced by the team
