Overview

BookNook is seeking passionate, equity-minded educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early-learning gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey.

Our Online Literacy Tutors work in live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing software. We serve a diverse population of students and seek to build a team of tutors that is representative of the students we serve. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students.

  • Position Type: 1099-eligible independent contractor
  • Pay Rate: $18 per hour ($9 per 30-minute session)
  • Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability provided and # of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests
    • Sessions are held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school
    • Each program is 8-16 weeks and tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout

Responsibilities

  • Conduct virtual tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform – No lesson planning required!
  • Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment
  • Maintain positive relationships with students
  • Document observations for each session in the session notes

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be based in the U.S. and have a U.S. mailing address.
  • Knowledge of and experience in literacy best practices aligned to the research that makes up the science of reading.
  • Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.
  • Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are – students are asked at the beginning of each lesson how they are feeling that day.
  • Completed or enrolled in a teacher credential program.
  • Experience teaching/tutoring K-8 students, which may include, but is not limited to: having a current/previous teaching license, serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, instructor, AND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company.
  • Classroom experience preferred.
  • Online teaching/tutoring experience preferred.
  • Access to a computer, webcam, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.

Our Hiring Process

  • Apply: Submit an application online and receive a decision within 1-2 business days
  • Interview: Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit videos answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge. The interview portion is designed to be completed in less than 30 minutes, similar to a face-to-face interview
  • Hiring Decision: After the interview round, our team will notify applicants within 5 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process
  • Onboarding: Applicants selected for onboarding will be asked to complete:
    • A paid certification course about the BookNook platform
    • One or more state-required, fingerprint-based background checks, which can take up to 2-6 weeks depending on the state/district background check requirements
  • Qualified: Upon successful completion of onboarding, Tutors can access our Tutor Portal, where all available appointments will be listed
    • Note: Qualified BookNook Tutors are not guaranteed immediate or consistent tutoring work, but we are constantly adding new programs to our schedule
