Overview

BookNook is looking for dedicated, equity-focused educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. As a BookNook Tutor, you’ll play a key role in helping close the early-learning gap for K–8 students at a crucial stage in their education.

Our Online Literacy Tutors lead live, online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing tools. We support a diverse group of students and aim to build a tutoring team that reflects the communities we serve. This role offers an exciting chance to make a direct, positive impact on students.

Position Type: Independent contractor (1099)
Pay Rate: $18 per hour ($9 per 30-minute session)
Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week depending on your availability and the number of active programs. Schedules vary based on school needs.
• Sessions take place on weekdays only and may occur before, during, or after school.
• Each program lasts 8–16 weeks, and tutors are expected to stay with the same group of students for the full duration.

Responsibilities
• Lead virtual tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform – no lesson planning needed.
• Manage student behavior and participation during sessions.
• Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with students.
• Record observations for each session in the session notes.

Requirements
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must live in the U.S. and have a U.S. mailing address.
• Understanding of literacy best practices aligned with the science of reading.
• Ability to develop strong, motivating connections with students.
• Creativity and flexibility to support students based on their daily needs.
• Completion of or enrollment in a teacher credential program.
• Experience teaching or tutoring K–8 students, which may include holding a teaching license, working as a substitute teacher, teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, instructor, or working for another tutoring company.
• Classroom experience preferred.
• Online teaching or tutoring experience preferred.
• Access to a computer, webcam, and reliable high-speed internet (at least 10 Mbps).

Our Hiring Process
• Apply: Submit your application online and receive a response within 1–2 business days.
• Interview: Selected applicants will complete a one-way video interview answering questions about their experience and educational background. This step takes less than 30 minutes.
• Hiring Decision: Applicants will be notified within 5 business days if they are moving forward to onboarding.
• Onboarding: Selected candidates will complete a paid certification course on the BookNook platform and any state-required fingerprint background checks, which may take 2–6 weeks depending on state/district requirements.
• Qualified: Once onboarding is complete, tutors gain access to the Tutor Portal where available sessions are posted.
Note: Being a qualified BookNook Tutor does not guarantee immediate or consistent tutoring hours, but new programs are added regularly.
