ABOUT THE ROLE:
You will assess, improve, and produce top-tier writing across multiple genres and formats to help advance Grok’s capabilities in one or more specialized writing areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Use proprietary tools to label, annotate, and enhance AI‑generated text for clarity, structure, engagement, and accuracy within specific domains.
• Apply expertise in one or more Writing Specialties (such as creative fiction, game writing, or technical writing) to deliver high‑quality curated data that improves Grok’s writing both overall and for particular audiences or use cases.
• Work with engineers and other specialists to design tasks that strengthen the AI’s writing skills.
• Contribute to making annotation tools and workflows more efficient.
• Shift to additional writing or non‑writing tasks as needed to support Grok’s development.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong command of English and eligibility in at least one Writing Specialty (see below for role‑specific requirements).
• Ability to analyze and revise AI‑generated content for readability, logic, grammar, consistency, style, creativity, and immersive quality.
• Excellent attention to detail and experience using reference materials and style guides for accurate annotations.
• Impeccable grammar, spelling, clarity, and precision.
• Outstanding communication, interpersonal, analytical, and editorial skills.
• Dedication to developing AI capable of expert‑level writing.
• Highly adaptable and comfortable working under deadlines.
Applicants must meet the requirements for at least one Writing Specialty below and provide verifiable proof (such as URLs, ISBNs, award links).
Unverifiable or NDA‑restricted claims will lead to automatic rejection and future disqualification from applying to xAI.
CREATIVE FICTION WRITING:
For prose fiction: At least two of the following: major‑house novel deals, over 50,000 sold copies (not including free promotions), 10+ stories in major outlets, major award recognition, or significant critical acclaim.
For screenwriting: One or more of the following: verified credits on produced feature films from major studios/platforms, writing credits on 10+ produced TV episodes or equivalent streaming success, or nominations/wins for major screenwriting awards.
GAME WRITING:
All required: 5+ years professional game writing, a public portfolio showing branching narrative and character work, and credited contributions to notable games demonstrating narrative design skill.
TECHNICAL WRITING:
All required: 5+ years writing technical documentation, a public portfolio showing measurable impact, relevant professional certifications, and a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
NONFICTION WRITING:
All required: 5+ years nonfiction writing with 3+ commercially or critically successful books, a public portfolio demonstrating craft, and relevant awards or memberships. Preferred: degree in English, History, or Journalism.
JOURNALISTIC WRITING:
All required: 5+ years professional journalism experience, expertise in investigative or specialized reporting, a portfolio with bylines in major outlets, and a relevant bachelor’s degree or higher.
COPYWRITING:
All required: 5+ years copywriting or marketing writing experience; expertise across multiple formats; experience in content strategy or similar roles; a portfolio with measurable results; a bachelor’s degree or higher. Broad industry experience preferred.
WEB WRITING:
All required: 5+ years professional web content experience; proven SEO results; experience managing full content lifecycles; a portfolio showing high‑impact work; relevant digital marketing certifications; and a related bachelor’s degree or higher.
GRANT WRITING:
All required: 5+ years experience with over $1M secured funding and a 50%+ win rate; expertise in research and funder requirements; strong sample materials; and a related bachelor’s degree or higher.
LEGAL WRITING:
All required: JD from an accredited law school; 5+ years legal practice or law‑school teaching; familiarity with legal style guides; and a public portfolio demonstrating legal research and writing.
MEDICAL WRITING:
All required: Master’s degree or higher in life sciences; 5+ years medical writing experience; specialization in regulatory or scientific communication; and at least two peer‑reviewed publications.
ACADEMIC WRITING:
All required: 5+ years academic writing experience; strong publication record with significant citations or h‑index; a public portfolio; and a PhD in a relevant field. Postdoctoral experience preferred.
POETRY WRITING:
All required: an advanced degree in poetry or related fields; publications in respected journals or collections; a history of awards or residencies; and one or more major accomplishments such as books with major presses or major poetry awards.
Note: Applicants whose work is primarily free verse should not apply, as deep knowledge of classical poetic forms is required.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Familiarity with AI tools or prompt engineering.
• Ability to teach or critique writing in collaborative environments.
• Experience with Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, and similar tools.
LOCATION AND OTHER EXPECTATIONS:
• Tutor positions may be full‑time, part‑time, or contract roles.
• Contractor hours vary widely; most projects may average at least 10 hours per week, though this is not guaranteed. Contractors set their own schedules.
• Remote work is allowed worldwide, subject to legal and time‑zone constraints.
• xAI cannot currently hire in Wyoming or Illinois.
• Visa sponsorship is unavailable.
• Personal computers must be a Chromebook, Mac (macOS 11+), or Windows 10+.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
• US candidates: $45–$125 per hour depending on specialty, experience, skills, education, location, and qualifications.
• International candidates will receive compensation details during recruitment.
• Benefits depend on role type and jurisdiction. Eligible US roles may include health insurance, 401(k), and paid sick leave. Details will be provided during the interview process.
