Summary
We are looking for an exceptional engineer excited to work on search. You will help maintain and improve a search infrastructure that serves 890 million full text searches and billions of find-as-you-type searches every month on Wikipedia and its sister projects. In the process you’ll be in the vanguard of open source search, advancing what is possible with open source tools.
Description
We’re comfortable that the current search implementation (CirrusSearchandElasticsearch) is a platform worth building on. Now it’s time to build on it by:
Measuring user perceived result relevance and performance
Experimenting with improvements to search queries, rankings, and algorithms
Improve methods by which the communities we serve can help improve the quality of the search index
Properly support multilingual wikis like Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Main_Page
Work closely with desktop, mobile web, iOS app, and Android app teams to customize search for each experience’s differences while still ensuring all platforms benefit from shared infrastructure improvements
