We’re looking for Software Engineers to help to develop the world’s first smart heat network, and to a grow a new utility company whose business is based on heating and hot water as a service delivered using those smart heat networks.

Today the pilot control system is being built with a Python and SQL back end, with a front end in HTML5, Javascript and CSS.Distributed embedded controls run on a mixture of Arduinos and Raspberry Pis, with a healthy dose of 433/868 Mhz radio, low-level hardwired protocols and C-based code to integrate sensors and actuators. These directly control hot water and the heating in every room and manage the central equipment that generates and distributes heat. Back-office systems for metering, billing, and customer account management to support the commercial side of the business run on the same platform.

Tomorrow this may all change. We’re looking for someone flexible who can help deliver the pilot network and, either now or in the future, take the lead on system architecture and software for production solutions.

Requirements:

  • Are flexible yet bloody-minded enough to work in a startup
  • Don’t need anybody to explain Agile development and the importance of Unit Testing to you
  • Have fresh knowledge at least some of the technologies we currently use
  • Can design robust system architectures that are flexible and scalable
  • Can grow a team of developers and want to take a senior leadership role in future
  • Have the commercial and technical background to understand and take into account the wider needs of COHEAT as a fledgling utility company when designing solutions

Experience with the following would help:

  • Home automation and Internet of Things
  • Building physics and predictive control systems

Location is flexible: Cambridge or London.
