Dev Ops (MoodleCloud)

Moodle is an award-winning international open-source project providing essential software used by educational institutions and companies around the world. We have a growing community of millions of users, over 200 regular developers, and over 70 royalty-paying partner companies world-wide, all coordinated by our own team based in Perth, where Moodle was founded.
We are building a state-of-the-art MoodleCloud hosted service for educators worldwide. The MoodleCloud team is growing and is looking to engage an experienced, reliable, independent-working DevOps to join our collaborative team.
This position complements our MoodleCloud team in Australia by assisting with support, maintenance, deployments and upgrades of our MoodleCloud platform outside of Australian business hours.
To do this, you will need to have the capacity, experience and knowledge to understand our custom MoodleCloud stack and a variety of other Moodle community servers to a deep level quickly. Experience of large-scale hosting, and AWS services are expected.
This position expects a high level of problem solving, good communication, proven capacity for working independently, as well as flexibility to engage in occasional online synchronous team communication in out-of-business hours.
You will be working in an exciting new area of Moodle to develop Moodle services in new and innovative directions within our dedicated team.
What you need for this position:
Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrably equivalent commercial experience, knowledge and understanding
Minimum of 3 years previous experience in a devops or developer/sysadmin role within Amazon Web Services
Understanding of contemporary Cloud architecture
Confidence to perform deployments, maintenance and upgrades independently
Ability to work with development teams to troubleshoot and debug production issues;
Proficiency in linux server administration (e.g. upgrades, patches)
Capacity to take direction from other team members and to work independently within an international, multi-timezone team context
Outstanding communication skills with both technical and non-technical staff from diverse backgrounds

What you’ll be doing:
monitoring and resolving Cloud issues and alerts
conducting upgrades, patches, maintenance improvements
evaluating system performance and contributing system improvements
progressing backend development tasks for new MoodleCloud services, and supporting some front end integrations
effectively and consistently communicating work tasks, progress, issues to the Perth-based team through the Moodle project and communication systems
providing Cloud and Moodle IT support when key sysadmin and MoodleCloud team members on leave
What we especially like to see:
experience leading and working in a team in a development environment
previous contributions to open source projects
some experience in Cloud service maintenance and development.
