About the role

We’re seeking a driven Senior Full Stack Engineer who wants to make a meaningful impact at a mission-focused company. You’ll be eager to collaborate with a low-ego, highly supportive team and ready to take on substantial responsibility across multiple initiatives.

FreeWill uses fixed compensation and a no-negotiation policy to keep pay fair (we don’t believe compensation should depend on someone’s comfort with negotiating). We aim to be clear and transparent about pay. When we extend an offer, we present several options so candidates can choose between a package that emphasizes salary or stock options. The salary range for this position is $160,000–$170,000. This role also includes a signing bonus, equity, and full benefits.

Responsibilities

• Independently lead the design and development of new features
• Champion technical improvements that enhance quality, efficiency, and long-term stability
• Work within a modern tech stack: React, TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, AWS
• Collaborate closely with cross‑functional partners in legal, growth, sales, design, and product
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, direct conversations, and team training sessions

Technical Skills

• 5+ years building production systems for complex web applications
• Experience leading projects with multiple engineers, a product manager, and a designer
• B2B or B2B2C experience preferred; fintech and/or estate planning experience is a plus
• Strong preference for early‑stage startup experience
• Skilled in web architecture, including React, API design, and developer tools
• Familiar with TypeScript, Express, SQL, observability, performance tuning, CI, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure

Hiring Process

The hiring steps for this role are:
• Recruiter phone screen (30 minutes)
• Coding screen (45 minutes)
• “Super Day” interviews: four separate interviews with team members (30–60 minutes each)
• Offer (pending positive references)

Please note that the process may change; your recruiter will keep you updated. If you advance, they will provide additional details. Most hiring processes take about 4–6 weeks.

Along with the fulfillment of helping raise $1T for high‑impact nonprofits in a supportive and joyful workplace, full‑time FreeWill employees receive:
• Remote work
• Unlimited PTO
• Flexible schedules
• Competitive pay
• Commuter benefits

• 401(k)
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance (some individual medical plans fully covered; subsidized rates for dependents)

• Free One Medical membership
• Paid parental leave for all parents

Perks

• Regular virtual team events
• $250 monthly coworking stipend
• $300 annual budget to set up your home office or cover utilities
• $1,000 referral bonuses
• $1,000 annual professional development allowance

FreeWill is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity. We do not make hiring decisions based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other protected characteristic.

We are a remote‑first organization hiring in 47 states and Washington, D.C. We’re currently unable to hire in Colorado, Alabama, or Louisiana. We also cannot sponsor visas, so applicants must already be authorized to work in the U.S.

Don’t meet every requirement? Please apply anyway. Research shows that members of marginalized groups—such as women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color—are less likely to apply unless they meet all qualifications. FreeWill is committed to building an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible workplace where everyone feels they belong. If this role excites you but your experience doesn’t perfectly match every qualification, we still encourage you to apply. You may be the ideal fit for this or another open role.
