Job Description
The Development Group Manager I leads and mentors a team of 8–15 Developers working across multiple Software Engineering teams. This position blends technology and leadership, requiring strong technical expertise, excellent people management abilities, and strategic guidance. The primary mission of the Development Group Manager I is to support the growth and success of team members while upholding high product quality. This is a full-time role with remote, hybrid, and on-site options.

Responsibilities
• Optimizing Engineering Operations
• Own and manage timelines, processes, and implementation plans with input from the technical team, including milestone creation, meeting structure, documentation updates, and ticket writing or management
• Oversee and improve the efficiency of the team’s technical resources
• Stay engaged with team activities to identify issues early, resolve questions, and communicate feedback to the Development Department Manager
• Communicate strategy, ticket ownership, and support collaboration across teams or departments
• Participate in planning sessions to maintain a sustainable pace that ensures progress without burnout
• Offer advice and recommendations to increase team efficiency and effectiveness
• Ensure technical accountability and output by monitoring ticket progress, implementation plans, and other success indicators

• Strategic Planning and Coordination
• Partner with the Development Department Manager to identify and address cross-team, cross-department, and company-wide needs
• Help with staffing decisions, such as identifying gaps, defining roles, and adjusting team size to meet company objectives

• Product Involvement
• Build and maintain strong knowledge of the product areas under your responsibility
• Work with Software Engineering Management and Product Management to define strategic direction and roadmap planning
• Review and provide feedback on design documents when requested
• Communicate product priorities and direction clearly to individuals and the team

• Relationships, Trust, and Performance
• Build trusting relationships with direct reports through regular 1:1s, emphasizing psychological safety, respect, and trust
• Promote a culture of excellence and open communication, where employees feel confident sharing ideas and supported by leadership
• Develop productive relationships with peers and leadership to meet shared goals
• Provide coaching, development, and career guidance, including career planning, performance reviews, compensation discussions, and promotion decisions
• Set clear performance expectations, identify and manage underperformance proactively, and support termination processes when needed
• Reduce interpersonal and technical conflicts through effective mediation and facilitation
• Support onboarding for new engineers to minimize ramp-up time and ensure integration into the team

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience
• 8 years of industry experience
• Management experience or a demonstrated history of technical leadership
• Excellent communication skills
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities
• Strong written communication skills for clear and concise documentation
• Proficient programming skills in Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python
• Familiarity with agile practices such as SCRUM
• Familiarity with source control systems like GitHub
• Ability to document ideas and specifications accurately and effectively
• Ability to lead and support teams of four or more people

$160,000 – $180,000 a year
Pay
For the Sacramento region, the target salary range for new hires in this role is $160k–$180k.
Inductive Automation’s salary ranges are market-based and provide flexibility. While it is uncommon to start at the top of a range, compensation decisions depend on factors such as location, skills, experience, education or training, and business needs.
