What is Theta?
Many of our jobs are now 100% digital: we both produce work and communicate about it completely through the use of software. This puts a lot of pressure on our tools to be great. They should be fast, flexible, and expressive. Without great tools, we can’t do great work.
We think a critical missing tool for today’s digital workforce is one that helps us quickly and easily think through problems and communicate ideas visually, rather than just in text. So we decided to build that tool.
Theta is a fast and flexible visual thinking product that allows you to quickly map out ideas in an infinite 2d space, connect them together, brainstorm ideas, and consider solutions. We know that great work happens from the mixing of deep work and collaborative problem solving, so Theta supports incredible solo and live multi-player experiences.
While it’s an imperfect analogy, imagine what a mix of Notion and Roam Research might look like in a visual 2d canvas.
We have fantastic investors who have backed companies like Heroku, PagerDuty, and Circle CI.
How we work
- We’re a fully remote company and we’re happy to hire people from anywhere on the planet. We aim to have 3 hours of working overlap a day sometime between 9am to 5pm Eastern Time.
- We think over-communication is an important part of successful remote work.
- We care deeply about clear communication in writing everywhere we do work: Slack, Github pull requests, task descriptions, etc.
- We’re visual thinkers 😉 and love to use visuals to think through and explain problems.
- We care deeply about product quality and think every pixel and every little interaction matters.
What you’ll do
– Build features: You’ll be primarily building product. This means writing both front-end and back-end code and working with designers to plan out features. – Craft a world-class engineering culture: We’re a tiny company and you’ll be one of our first engineers, so we expect you to contribute a lot to how we write code, how we manage technical debt, and how the engineering discipline is understood and applied at the company. – Recruit excellent people: You’ll help us recruit and close excellent new team members. You’ll also help set a standard for excellence inside the company and provide a fantastic interview experience for candidates. – Contribute ideas for how we can improve across the organization: You might be an engineer, but we want you to contribute to helping us build a great company across the board. That means speaking up when you think things could improve, proposing better ways of working, evaluating and configuring new tools, or reviewing work from other areas like marketing.
Who you are
– You consider yourself a generalist. While you have a specialty area, you’re not dogmatic about using specific technologies. You’re happy to learn new technologies and you do so quickly. You’re perfectly comfortable writing front-end Javascript code, configuring our CI pipeline, speeding up our development environment, solving production deployment issues, and just about anything else engineering related. While you don’t need to be a Javascript expert, our stack is almost entirely Typescript (Next/React, Express, Postgres) so if you love JS you’ll really fit in here. – You love to ship. One of the hardest parts of building great software is building high quality things but also getting them out fast. You care about that balance and know how to break down problems into small pieces that can be built extremely well but also shipped quickly. – You love remote work. We’re a fully remote team, so you must love remote work and understand what working remote is like.
