We are looking for an experienced software engineer to help develop BIND 9. This is a highly visible open source project. BIND 9 is a widely used DNS server, and is critical to the functioning of the Internet. Not only will your users be reading your code, and giving you feedback, but researchers will be running experiments testing the impact of your software on the Internet functioning.

This engineer will be a core part of the BIND 9 development team, working on both maintenance and new features. This is a small team of highly skilled experienced developers. We need a professional programmer, ideally with experience developing networking software. While the initial need is for BIND 9, you may be asked to work on another ISC project (all open source).

Among the responsibilities of this position are:

  • Working with the team to design and develop new features
  • Tracking down and fixing bugs
  • Reviewing code changes (we are serious about this, code reviews are a key part of our quality process)
  • Assisting release engineering (last year we cut 64 separate releases!)
  • Assisting project planning
  • Analyzing and responding to bug reports from a variety of sources
  • Participating in organisations such as the IETF to develop Internet protocols
