About the Role
The Athletic is now accepting applications for the Leon H. Carter newsroom internship for Fall 2026.

The NHL intern will be an essential part of the hockey department, writing and reporting stories across the league’s 32 teams. This is a 12-week program running from September through December 2026. The intern will be embedded with the NHL department’s News, Enterprise, and Trending team, which includes both fast turnaround assignments and longer, deeper reporting projects focused on some of hockey’s most compelling storylines. The goal of The Athletic’s internship program is to attract and develop the next generation of media talent. The intern will help shape our most informative hockey coverage while supporting our mission to be the world’s leading destination for sports news.

This is a remote internship available to candidates living in the US and Canada only. Some travel to Chicago and/or New York City may be required. Candidates based in New York City may choose to work on-site at the NYC office.

Pay for this role is $20 USD per hour.

Responsibilities
– Write NHL breaking news stories.
– Pitch, report, write, and fact-check hockey stories.
– Follow The Athletic’s editorial standards.
– Attend regular editorial meetings and collaborate with NHL editors and reporters on ideas and assignments.
– Edit and publish hockey stories.

Requirements
– Undergraduate students, ideally in junior year, senior year, or recent graduates.
– Ability to work 30–40 hours per week, including nights and weekends.
– A background in journalism and an understanding of how newsrooms operate.
– Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
– Flexibility to adapt to a fast-paced environment where priorities may change quickly.
– Strong knowledge of, and passion for, hockey.

Pay for this role is $20 USD per hour.

In the U.S., depending on the role, you may be eligible for variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
