About this role

We’re looking for a mechanical engineer to help us build high precision optical assembly systems, allowing us to scale up manufacturing of our novel AI hardware that will support neural networks at the size of the human brain and beyond. At Fathom Radiant, you will work closely with teams of packaging engineers, optical lens designers and optoelectronic device designers. You will lead the effort through concept, prototyping, and manufacturing. You will be responsible for interacting with various vendors and suppliers to procure parts for and develop these systems.
Hands on experience with rapid prototyping is highly desired including design, manufacturing and assembly of mechanical systems. Experience with 3D printing and/or CNC machining is highly desirable.

Areas of contribution

Work closely with Fathom Radiant’s various technical teams to develop unique and novel optical assembly systems
Develop assembly systems to enable volume manufacturing and assembly
Work closely with manufacturing partners to understand constraints and capabilities of manufacturing and automated assembly; design for manufacturing
Lead requirements definition, design, simulation and prototyping of the assembly for Fathom’s optical-electronic computer system, with components ranging from micro-optics mounts to micro-positioning systems to precision connectors.

Requirements for this role

B.S., MS, or PhD in physics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum 7 years experience in mechanical engineering.
Experience with high precision motion control systems.
Experience with precision machine design.
Experience with 3D modeling.
Experience with 2D mechanical drawings for fabrication.
Ability to perform tolerance analysis on mechanical designs.
Hands on lab experience assembling mechanical systems.
Ability to work cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines.

Nice-to-haves

Software development experience in C, C++, or Python
Software development for digital image processing
Experience with designing for and or operating CNC machining equipment (Mills or Lathes)
Experience with designing for and or operating 3D printing machines
Experience designing high precision mechanical systems
Experience with optical systems
Experience working with and managing contract manufacturers for component manufacturing and system assembly

Indicative salary range for this role: $100,000 – $160,000
