The AP seeks a Senior Web and Mobile Architectto lead an engineering team that envisions, builds and evolves our advertising-driven direct-to-consumer products, including the AP News website https://apnews.com and our mobile apps on the iOS and Android platforms. As the leader of the AP News engineering team you will be responsible for all aspects of technology delivery and be a thought-leader among the advertising, product and editorial teams, bringing insight and vision as AP grows direct-to-consumer revenue. And as a member of the development team, you will make significant hands-on contributions, leveraging your engineering expertise to build, deploy and support a cloud-based content management platform that delivers news to 2/3 of the world’s population every day.

Responsibilities

• Leadand evolve the development team using cutting edge engineering practices

• Become an expert on AP’s direct-to-consumer stack (web, mobile, backend), identifying transformation opportunities related to stability, agility, security and fit for future roadmap

• Translate business and editorial requirements into architectural vision and implementation details

• Ensure the security, scalability and performance of the web and mobile platforms to a global audience, particularly during breaking news events

• Develop, code, test, deploy and support the platform as a hands-on member of the team

Qualifications

• 10+ years hands-on experience building highly scalable consumer facing websites and mobile applications

• 5+ years’ experience as the leader of an engineering team setting architectural vision

• Hands-on experience with most of the following technologies:

• Google Cloud Platform including AppEngine and Cloud Storage

• Amazon Web Services including compute and storage technologies

• Python, Django/DRF, Postgres, Sphinx, Swagger

• Redis/Memcache, Elastic Search

• TypeScript, ReactJS, NodeJS, MobX, Koa

• iOS and Android: Kotlin, XCode, Swift, RealmSwift, Firebase, Facebook SDK

• Google Ads, Taboola, Nativo and other ad stack technologies

• Deep experience with video and photo publishing workflow and content management, including optimization and delivery of video to consumer channels such as YouTube and other social networks

• Experience architecting and implementing caching solutions using best of breed techniques, including both client and server-side rendering and use of vendor caching technologies

• Experience architecting, building, and deploying well-reviewed, highly trafficked media driven apps for both iOS and Android platforms, including specific approval workflow for each app provider

• Experience automating the testing and deployment of multi-tiered web solutions in a continuous deployment model

• Experience integrating advertising stack technologies including video ad unit placement

• Experience exploiting and implementing best of breed search engine optimization techniques

• Some experience and perspective with commercial content management solutions and ability to lead a technical evaluation and potential transformation (i.e. Drupal, WordPress, etc)
