Position Title: Public Health Epidemiologist

Overview:
The Public Health Epidemiologist role at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will play a major part in public health by planning, developing, and conducting investigations into the causes of negative health outcomes, including disease and injury. The position also involves implementing interventions to control and prevent these outcomes.
Qualifications:
– Knowledge of epidemiologic principles, investigations, surveillance, study design, descriptive statistics, statistical analysis, and interpreting statistical data and scientific literature.
– Strong knowledge of biostatistics, including use of statistical software and statistical programming languages.
– Strong knowledge of computers, database design, management, and manipulation.
– Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
– A master’s degree in epidemiology or a closely related health field from an accredited institution.
– Two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities:
– Work may significantly influence public health by planning, developing, and conducting investigations into the causes of negative health outcomes, including disease and injury.
– Implement interventions to control and prevent negative health outcomes.
– Collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data and prepare epidemiologic reports.
– Provide epidemiological data for consultation and help develop and coordinate plans to reduce the risk of negative outcomes, including death.
– Assist county health departments with strategy development, conduct a variety of literature reviews, and implement evidence-based interventions.
– May focus on areas such as infectious disease, chronic disease, injury, environmental/occupational epidemiology, health care evaluation, cancer, reproductive health, cardiovascular disease, or human genetics.
– May develop policies and procedures for new or existing disease control or other public health prevention programs on a limited basis.
– Provide training, technical assistance, and consultation related to epidemiology and disease control or other health outcomes.
– Serve as a technical expert in the assigned area.
– May include trend analysis and independent statistical and epidemiological analysis.

The listed responsibilities may be expanded or updated to reflect priorities and needs, with approval from both the CDC Foundation and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, to best support North Carolina’s public health efforts.
This position is currently remote, and the CDC Foundation may adjust this as needed.
