The Freedom of the Press Foundation is looking to hire a contract frontend developer to build frontend web components for our websites, including the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, SecureDrop.org, and Freedom.press.
We’re a small team of web developers working on high-impact projects. The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker is the primary source of information on threats and attacks against press freedom in the U.S. SecureDrop.org is our open-source platform for whistleblower submissions, used by major news organizations both in the U.S. and abroad.
The ideal candidate knows React and can take partially designed or specified features and turn them into fully functioning components that align with our design system—even if they are not a professional designer.
This is a 6-month contract with the possibility of renewal. You can be in any time zone, but we prefer candidates who are available for communication during afternoon working hours in EST.
**Scope of Work**
Working with the Freedom of the Press Foundation’s Principal Web Developer, you will:
– Implement and refine frontend components for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, SecureDrop.org, and Freedom.press, including (but not limited to):
– Smart search bar
– Data visualizations
– Interactive database filter tools
– Donation and membership forms integrated with our payment processors
– Page templates
– Connecting frontend components with Python APIs and server-side templates
– Visual and functional improvements to templates and JavaScript components
– Enhancing frontend test coverage
– Additional tasks and projects as assigned by the Principal Web Developer
**Desired Qualifications**
– Strong knowledge of modern HTML and CSS, along with familiarity with accessibility and progressive enhancement practices.
– Experience with JavaScript tooling such as Webpack and Babel.
– Experience with React and JSX.
– UI/UX design skills are a plus.
– Experience with Python, Django, or Wagtail is not required, but is a plus.
**Term of Contract**
The contract will begin on a mutually agreed date no later than October 31, 2022, for an initial term of 6 months.
**Payments and Schedule**
All proposals should include a schedule outlining fees and hours. Payment will follow the proposed schedule and be invoiced monthly. The contractor is responsible for all legally required deductions, taxes, and benefits from the provided amount. FPF has allocated a fixed budget of $40,000 for this initial contract.
