ProPublica, the country’s largest investigative news organization, is seeking an executive producer to oversee the creation of a new podcast series and to act as the main point of contact for audio partnerships with other media organizations. We see this new leader’s role as essential to expanding the reach and impact of our journalism. We’re looking for an experienced journalist with a background in accountability reporting and a proven ability to turn stories involving complex issues and secretive sources into compelling programs. Strong management and communication skills are required.
While ProPublica has already co-produced several successful podcasts, including “We Don’t Talk About Leonard” and “Trump, Inc.,” creating our own seasonal program is a new endeavor for us. We’re looking for someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, strong industry relationships, and a clear understanding of the logistical and financial challenges involved in entering the crowded podcasting market.
In this position, you would select and manage the hosts for the new podcast series and help bring ProPublica’s reporting to life in audio. You would collaborate with large teams of staff reporters and editors, as well as freelance field producers and sound engineers, to identify the stories that will be featured each season. You would oversee all aspects of planning, directing, and producing episodes, including podcasts we choose to co-produce with other media companies.
This role reports to a managing editor.
Key responsibilities include:
– Organizing auditions to select hosts for the seasonal program.
– Identifying stories in the ProPublica newsroom to feature, and developing new ideas that could become standalone audio projects.
– Helping shape a distinct audio style and narrative voice for ProPublica.
– Advising reporters and providing feedback and guidance on scripts and drafts.
– Ensuring strong journalistic ethics and rigorous fact-checking throughout production.
– Working with members of the business team to secure production and post-production funding.
– Building new relationships with production partners and securing distribution.
– Coordinating publicity for audio releases with partners and the communications team.
We’re looking for someone who:
– Is a skilled, versatile producer and narrative storyteller with seven or more years of experience.
– Has a strong creative vision and a track record of developing and producing excellent audio storytelling in a newsroom, production company, studio, or similar setting.
– Brings innovative audio sensibilities, along with high editorial standards and uncompromising journalism ethics.
– Has strategic experience building a pipeline of audio projects that balance journalistic rigor, quality, and ethical standards with creative and artistic storytelling.
– Builds strong relationships and partnerships across departments, disciplines, and industries.
– Has experience working successfully with both print and audio journalists and producers.
– Can package projects, develop strong pitching materials, and pursue financial support.
– Is interested in expanding what investigative journalism can be in audio and how it can reach mainstream audiences.
– Can manage multiple projects at the same time.
– Is available for occasional travel to meet with reporters and newsrooms or attend other required events.
– Has knowledge of trauma-informed practices and experience handling complex and sensitive topics.
This is a full-time role with benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but we welcome remote candidates. We have offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Austin, Texas, Phoenix, and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000.
This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay. The final salary will depend on the person’s experience, accomplishments, and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff fairly, and these ranges should not be viewed as limits or caps.
