We’re hiring a Senior Full-Stack Engineer with strong back-end skills to help modernize and maintain vital systems—especially the less glamorous ones like legacy codebases—that keep our platform running. This is not a management position. We need a reliable, experienced engineer who’s excited to improve stability, scalability, and maintainability.
You’ll collaborate with our fully remote team to support systems built with Ruby on Rails and PHP/Laravel, with some involvement in React/Next.js/TypeScript front-end development. We’re especially interested in engineers who like digging into complex problems, take pride in delivering high-quality work, and can operate independently with minimal guidance.
Why Join Proton
- Remote-first culture with flexible hours.
- A collaborative, respectful team with a passion for music and code.
- Opportunities to grow across different technologies and systems.
- Competitive compensation and meaningful work supporting independent artists.
- Proton is values-driven—each team has its own value set. You can review the engineering team’s values here.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain, refactor, and enhance existing systems, including a legacy PHP application that uses raw SQL.
- Help modernize that application using Laravel, Rails, and GraphQL.
- Support our Rails platform with clean, scalable code.
- Work with front-end engineers on React/Next.js projects when needed.
- Write high-performance SQL when ORM solutions aren’t sufficient.
- Contribute to API development, including migrating from REST to GraphQL.
- Work across GCP and Netlify, using Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
- Use the Shape Up approach to deliver focused, high-impact work.
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of back-end or full-stack development experience.
- Strong experience with a modern web framework (e.g., Ruby on Rails, PHP/Laravel, Django, Spring, .NET, etc.).
- Experience with Ruby on Rails or PHP/Laravel is a plus, or the enthusiasm to learn them quickly if you don’t already.
- Excellent SQL skills, including the ability to write queries confidently without relying on an ORM.
- Familiarity with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Ability to thrive in a remote, async-first environment with strong communication skills.
- Experience with Git/GitHub, Docker, and cloud infrastructure.
- Self-driven, accountable, and eager to learn.
Nice to Haves
- Experience with Laravel migrations or legacy-to-modernization projects.
- Familiarity with Shape Up or similar agile methodologies.
- Knowledge of web security basics.
