As a well rounded system engineer, this also makes you one of the very best people to test new features and test different use cases. You should definitely be the type that appreciates diversity in your day, and challenges outside of your comfort level! A typical day might include these types of activities:
- Deploying a new anycasted, Multi-master MySQL node for our cloud environment. Since you’ve already automated the process, it takes little of your time.
- Testing out a new product feature and scripting some tests to see if it works as expected. Talking to the development team about what you liked (or didn’t like).
- Working with the development team to design how integration with a new DNS system (or monitoring system, or cloud service).
- Assisting a customer troubleshooting a local software install on a 1998 install of OS/2 WARP (joking, kind of).
The right candidates will have an extreme abundance of scripting/programming and automating skills, great trouble shooting skills across the OS and network, a good grasp on security concepts, experience with multiple DNS and DHCP platforms, well rounded work in network administration, and enjoy working collaboratively. More specifics include:
- A ridiculous amount of experience in automating tasks through scripting. You must know PHP, and probably other languages. We will ask for script samples.
- Experience administering a wide variety of *nix platforms.
- Experience administering both ISC and Microsoft DNS/DHCP platforms.
- Basic abilities in network administration – working with Cisco, Juniper, Brocade, and a solid understanding of multiple network protocols.
- A huge plus if you have already deployed IPv6, administered DHCPv6, or deployed DNSSEC and are familiar with the the RFCs in this area.
