Position Highlights:
Position Title: Chemist II
Location: Onsite (Raleigh, North Carolina)
Position End Date: 3/31/2026
Salary: $65,000 plus benefits
Overview:
The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a Chemist II supporting the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Under general supervision, the Chemist II will be responsible for assisting with a government based postmortem toxicology program. Duties will include working to obtain, review and analyze data and reports from fatal overdoses.
This position provides critical support to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (NC OCME) through a diverse range of responsibilities. This role is primarily responsible for conducting single-analyte quantifications and performing complex assays, including multi-analyte screening and quantification. In addition to hands-on laboratory work, this position plays a pivotal role in supporting Forensic Toxicologists by assisting with research on current trends and developments in forensic toxicology.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor of Science or in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Forensic Science required and 5 years of relevant work experience.
· Graduate degree in forensic science, chemistry, toxicology, laboratory sciences or related field preferred and 2 years of relevant work experience.
· Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to communicate in a positive and professional manner.
· Ability to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines.
· Strong technical and analytical skills should include spreadsheet management and database management.
· Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams.
· Knowledge of the principles, practice, and current developments in the field of analytical toxicology.
· Demonstrated experience in independently performing and recording complex standardized laboratory tests, procedures and data analysis.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SmartSheets, Teams and Zoom.
Responsibilities:
· Receive, track, and store body fluids, tissue, and other substances for testing in the forensic laboratory setting.
· Assists with forensic testing using GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and related instrumentation.
· Maintains a secure chain-of-custody of biological evidence.
· Contributes to maintenance of supplies and inventory, including the preparation of buffers and standards as requested.
· Supports laboratory data analysis, in an effort to identify trends, anomalies and other indicators.
