The Office of Informational Technology (OIT) is searching for an experienced system administrator and developer and user support person to act as a ‘Campus Cyberinfrastructure Engineer (CIE)’ as part of a National Science Foundation funded two-year project to augment and develop the use of cyberinfrastructure in support of research IT efforts at UCI. Successful fulfillment of the goals and tasks of the initial project will allow the position to continue beyond the two year period and become a permanent staff position within OIT.

The position reports within OIT’s Research Computing Support (RCS) group which supports research computing clusters and storage, high performance networking, scientific computing support in Bioinformatics, parallel computing, graphical information systems, and other others of research IT.

This position is expected to design, develop, test, refine, and implement advanced hardware and software solutions used in a highly technical networked, high-performance computing environment in support of campus research computing efforts. Expected tasks for the CIE include: 1) provide outreach and consulting with researchers on the use of campus computing clusters, advanced large scale storage systems, and high performance research networks; 2) user support of the UCI Lightpath research network including working with OIT networking architects to improve local network performance to LightPath; 3) develop and support compute cluster large scale distributed storage systems including integration with offsite storage to provide improved data reliability, transfer, and overall performance. Provide similar functionality to coordinated campus storage efforts for all data research, and 4) develop a ‘cluster cloud bursting’ functionality using cloud computational resources to augment local campus computational cluster capabilities
