We’re building a web application that will help people explore and visualize 100’s of millions of objects at interactive rates. We’re looking for somebody to architect the application, help hire a team, and then lead the developmenteffort and bring the application into production. The implementationis from scratch, but is based on experience with an in-productionlegacy system, so the requirements are as solid as they come.
This is a full-time position offering a market-competitive salary and benefits. Teraviz is being built by a small (but growing) and verystable company that has been delivering big-data solutions for decades. The team is distributed, but you will need to travel regularly (once or twice a month) to the East Coast for in-person meetings, candidates along the Boston-Washington Corridor may find this easier.
You will need to have full-stack understanding of everything from howdatabases work to how to design a GUI, and will be expected to dosignificant coding. The database has been chosen, but you’ll be responsible for picking the rest of the technology stack. Knowledge of web visualization technologies, forexample D3.js, would be great. However, you won’t need to do italone, as you will help choose 2-3 more people to round out your development team.
You will need to have led a small team before, be experienced enoughto recognize “danger areas” in the plans and schedules you puttogether, and have reasoned opinions on architectural approaches anddevelopment methodologies. You’ll also need to feel comfortablecommunicating with company management about plans, includingjustifying budget proposals and updating them on progress.
Since the project involves integrating with new database technology(we’re one of the first few licensees), there’s no way to ask forexperience with that aspect. Instead, we need somebody who canget up to speed quickly. We believe that requires an existing strongunderstanding of how databases work down to a fairly low level. Tobe clear, you won’t need to do implementation work on the database(it’s a very new commercial off-the-shelf system), but you will need to knowenough to recognize when things are going sideways and be ableto communicate effectively with the vendor’s field engineers.
