Intern – Transit Tech (summer 2025) – Boston, MA

As a Transit Tech intern in TID, you will help us build, support, and improve technology used by both transit riders and operations staff (e.g., dispatchers, or the operators who drive our trains and buses). We are seeking a person who with some familiarity in transit, spreadsheets, coding, or data who is interested in learning about and modernizing the operations of a transit agency.
We are hiring for two intern positions. These have different focuses, but the skills required are similar and there may be activities shared between the two roles:
Transit Data: You will work on the open real-time and schedule data we publish to drive official tools like our digital screens and app, as well as third-party apps like Google Maps.
Dispatching Apps: You will work on the apps that our front-line staff use to manage transit service and make sure we’re delivering high-quality transit to our riders.
As an intern, you will get guidance and mentorship from the MBTA’s Transit Technology managers, the Director of Transit Technology, and other members of the MBTA Technology Innovation Department. You will be part of a recognized, industry-leading team that is improving the technology the MBTA’s front-line staff use to manage transit operations so that riders receive the best possible service and real-time information.
Responsibilities:

    • Participate in guided trips to the stations or garages to ground-truth information about our system, or understand how MBTA front-line staff are (or aren’t!) using the technology tools we work on.
    • Assist senior team members on user research with operations staff. Share feedback and recommendations back to our team so that we can improve upon the processes and tools that help our Operations colleagues to do their work more safely and efficiently.
    • Analyze data(which might include writing code depending on your comfort/skill with this) to help our teams identify areas for improvement or support.
    • Present your opinions and analyses with teammates and Operations stakeholders in an easily understandable format. This could be a data visualization, slide deck, spreadsheet graph, or other presentation tool.
    • Help configure, deploy, and support the devices that MBTA staff use to access digital dispatching tools like Skate, Glides, and Orbit.

    • You have experience (including classroom experience)with technical skills such as data analysis, computer science, or logistics.
    • You are curious, organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
    • You like helping others to use technology (even if they aren’t as tech-savvy as you are)
    • You have experience working responsibly with sensitive items, systems, or data (e.g., handling money, personal information, or credentials).
    • You are a current college or graduate school student.
Minimum education:

    • A high school diploma or equivalent (G. E.D.) from an accredited institution.
    • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or graduate school program.

Location:
Full-time, primarily on-site (either in-office or on the system) with hybrid work at MBTA’s discretion.
Compensation:
Undergraduate students: $ 16.50 – $ 19.50 per hour
Graduate students: $ 21.00 – $ 24.00 per hour
