Are you ready to take the next step in your career as a developer? Do you enjoy working in Perl, Ruby and/or Python, and JavaScript? Are you looking to work with friendly colleagues, on projects that make a difference, and fresh technology challenges? If so, joining mySociety’s 15-person engineering team might interest you.

We’d like to hire a developer into our commercial team, which builds and deploys Software as a Service products based on our charitable tools, plus bespoke web sites, services and apps, for clients primarily in the local government, public and not-for-profit sectors.

You will be comfortable working with clients both big and small, listening to their needs and helping to translate those into tickets, project plans and features. You’ll come with the ability to discuss and explain technical concepts to non-expert stakeholders and it would be great if you already have experience working to develop digital services with or within the public sector.

Your work will help us sustain ourselves through commercial activity, and increase our reach in the UK. And as a mySociety developer you can see the benefits and talk to the users, every day.

No recruiters or agencies, please.

What does the role involve?

As a Web Developer on our commercial team you will help us to:

  • Develop new Software as a Service products for our public sector and not-for-profit clients

  • Further develop and extend our https://fixmystreet.org and https://www.fixmystreet.com services

  • Build new commercial service extensions on the open source code developed by the charity

  • Customise, integrate and deploy our off-the-shelf services for clients

  • Build and maintain open source tools to help you develop this software

Salary and Benefits

Salary is in the range of £30,000 to £45,000 depending on experience, plus pension (3% employer contribution, 5% employee).

This is a full time role initially for a fixed contract of 12 months, with the aim of extending to a permanent role should we secure sufficient funding and hit our commercial targets.

We expect you to be based in the UK and you need to have the right to work in this country (sorry, but we can’t offer help with visas or relocation expenses).

Most of our staff work remotely whilst still seeing each other face to face as often as we can. We work from home, co-working spaces, or small offices. We have small clusters of people around Bristol and London and would particularly like to hear from people based near those cities, but will accept applicants from anywhere in the United Kingdom. We only ask that you are willing to travel to other parts of the country to see colleagues and clients perhaps a dozen times a year.

Deadlines and dates

The application deadline is 10am on Wednesday 26th October and interviews will take place week commencing 31st October. We will aim to notify applicants of whether or not they will be invited to interview by Friday 28th October.

Application instructions

Your application should consist of a CV and covering statement.

Use your covering letter to show us why your skills make you a good fit for this role. At some point we’re also going to want to see some samples of work that best represent you, so if you have examples online, let us know where to find them.
