The System Administrator is responsible for installing, maintaining, upgrading, and monitoring computer hardware, software, system and networks. He is also responsible for ensuring the servers are backed up, and that the server data is secured against unauthorized access. He will also often perform light programming, usually scripting, which involves writing programs to automate tasks.
Responsibilities Operations and Support
- Check on a daily basis that all the hardware are accounted for, verify the integrity server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs and reviewing that all the scheduled daily tasks have been performed.
- Monitor the security checks regularly to verify that the system has not been breached.
- Ensure that all the file systems and system data are backed up daily on the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are made and media is recycled and sent off site for safety.
- Carry out regular file archival and purge as needed.
- Delete, change and create user accounts as requested.
- Recover and repair from failures due to hardware malfunctions or software crashes. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
- Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of information systems and electronic data processing (EDP).
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for electronic data processing and computer systems operations and development.
- Meet with managers to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines.
- Hire and manage information systems personnel and contractors to design, develop, implement, operate and administer computer and telecommunications software, networks and information systems
- Control the computer systems budgets and expenditures
Maintenance
- Check for patches and upgrade of the operating system and apply them regularly.
- Upgrade the administrative utility and tools and configure CPU, memory and disk partitions as necessary.
- Maintain operativity, configuration and other procedures.
- Carry out ongoing performance tuning, upgrade the hardware and resource optimization as needed.
