Our flagship product is Decrypt, a software platform for collecting and processing foreign language text data with a UI for enabling users to quickly interpret the data. Over the last 12 months, we’ve deployed Decrypt to more than a dozen groups in the government. Decrypt is driving some of our most important military and foreign policy decisions by enabling our government partners to understand and respond to foreign actors in ways previously not possible.

We are looking for a Backend Engineering Manager to lead a team of backend engineers responsible for building pipelines to extract, process, and exploit mission critical data. You will divide your time between hands on software development, people management, and crafting the technical roadmap and vision. We also do something common in Silicon Valley tech companies but radical in the defense space: we develop and test products side-by-side with our users, including on US military bases and remote locations abroad. Our engineering culture is about empathizing with users and building software products that deliver maximum impact on national security.
As a founding member of the team your decisions today will have a large impact on the company now and into the future. You will lead the team through an exciting time as we grow in size and evolve out of scrappy startup habits. Your foundational work will be essential to the success of the company. We believe that simple systems are easier to understand, maintain, and scale – we prefer pragmatic, product-centric solutions. You are innovative: willing to take risks, think critically about novel solutions, and advocate for your ideas while seeking feedback and collaboration. You will be making trade-offs as you work to ensure that our systems are prepared to scale — being able to effectively communicate these trade-offs with your team and other stakeholders is a must.
What you’ll do
- Develop innovative solutions for extracting data from various online sources
- Develop and manage well-functioning databases and applications
- Work with engineers to ensure we build high quality software
- Facilitate a productive work environment that results in high impact sprints
- Hold regular one-on-ones with your team, including ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance evaluations
- Actively engage with our recruiting team on targeted hiring efforts. Ensuring we have the right people in the right roles is a top priority
- Work cross-functionally with the Mission Success and Mission Development teams to build the right products
- Set priorities for the team tied to Vannevar Labs’ strategic goals
Qualifications
- 1+ years managing a backend team of engineers
- 5+ years as a backend developer or similar role
- Experience building scalable data pipelines
- Developed and managed well-functioning databases and applications
- Experience designing and writing effective APIs
- Familiarity with relational databases
- Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills
- U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access U.S. only data systems
Additional Qualifications (Nice to haves)
- Experience with Python
- Experience managing applications in AWS or similar
- Experience supporting DL/ML (either CV or NLP) model development
- Experience with React, GraphQL, NodeJS
