As Legal Counsel, Platform Liability & Enforcement at Spotify, you will help oversee Spotify’s legal takedown processes and policies, and you will provide legal guidance to the teams that develop, implement, and support Spotify’s content policies. You will also work to resolve claims related to these policies and help build scalable processes. Your ability to conduct risk-based assessments and proactively find solutions to complex problems will be essential.
**What You’ll Do**
– Advise on Spotify’s global compliance with platform liability frameworks and content safe harbor laws (e.g., Digital Services Act, DMCA, and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act)
– Support the management of Spotify’s legal takedown workflow across different types of content and legal issues, including intellectual property and speech-related offenses
– Provide platform liability legal counsel across Spotify, including identifying issues and developing strategies for exciting new products
– Partner with internal and external counsel and government affairs experts to monitor evolving legal requirements in the territories where Spotify operates
– Advise the teams responsible for building, managing, and implementing Spotify’s content policies, including Trust & Safety and Content Protection
– Contribute to proactive enforcement efforts to address potential misuse of the Spotify platform
– Provide legal support for lawsuits and media inquiries related to content takedown matters
– Collaborate with operations teams inside and outside the legal organization to develop efficient, scalable practices for legal takedown requests
– Participate in rotational assignments as business needs require
**Who You Are**
– A law degree (or equivalent)
– 5+ years of experience in a law firm and/or an in-house legal department
– Strong knowledge of intermediary liability frameworks, with a preference for experience litigating intermediary liability cases
– Demonstrated expertise in copyright law and other content-related legal issues
– Experience evaluating and advising on a wide range of legal standards, including when they are new to you
– Experience working with global stakeholders
– A strong interest in legal challenges, with the ability to explain legal concepts to non-lawyers
– A solution-oriented mindset and the ability to stay calm when issues arise
– A collaborative, builder mindset—especially when working with non-lawyers—to develop practical, implementable tools and operational solutions
– Self-motivated, with the ability to identify and complete tasks without needing direction
– Skilled at handling multiple priorities and triaging to ensure the right matters get attention
– Willingness to dive deeply into projects
– Comfortable working effectively as part of a team with both lawyers and non-legal stakeholders
**Where You’ll Be**
– This role is based in New York, New York
– You’ll have flexibility to work where you do best. There will be some in-person meetings, while still enabling substantial work from home
The United States base salary range for this role is $170,366–$243,380, plus equity. Benefits include health insurance, six months of paid parental leave, a 401(k) retirement plan, 23 paid days off, and 13 paid flexible holidays.
