Hey you,
Looking for a job sucks. Not dissimilar to dating, it’s a grueling process that leaves some feeling unappreciated and vulnerable.
What’s more, it’s so frustrating to have to wade through vague descriptions and buzzwords to decipher what a company really wants out of you. Trying to make sure it won’t be a thankless exploitation for long hours of something you really don’t give a crap about.
This may be a maddening or difficult time, and I hope you find something that fuels you, brings you happiness, and takes advantage of your skills.
Whether or not we wind up working together, please know that you are enough. In your search, be sure to look for the red flags, trust your gut, and remember that — even when you feel like you don’t — you’ve got this. Keep going.
Hang in there,
Amanda

Our Ideal Candidate
All the buzzwords and professional jargon aside, we’re looking for a real person who appreciates clever marketing, leads projects well, and will roll up their sleeves to get shit done. We need someone driven by progress, who pushes creative boundaries and has a deep understanding of the art of product marketing with a customer-centric focus.
Our ideal candidate is, at their core, a storyteller — someone content-obsessed with the ability to research and understand complicated concepts, size up their audience, then clearly and concisely explain things in ways that resonate with their audience. They must genuinely grasp our customer’s experiences and develop clever, empathetic marketing strategies that use a smart interplay between words and visuals to translate our product’s features and benefits into relatable and valuable content — all while respecting customers’ time and attention.
Their organizational, communication, and leadership skills are second to none. They enjoy researching, analyzing, and developing innovative solutions or improvements to standardize replicable strategies. They’ll use these skills to work closely with company leadership to strategize and develop long-term plans that initiate new levels of creativity and success at Scanned Inc.
Their goal is to safeguard and improve the efficiency of the marketing department to facilitate accelerating the growth and long-term success of our brands and products across multiple markets and platforms. They’ll need strong, proven, foundational skills in marketing processes and leadership. They’ll often need to process complex information, search for the actionable point, make a realistic game plan, and see it through to completion. Their strong attention to detail and results is essential. So much so, they’d even go so far to demonstrate their strong attention to detail by including the word “banana” in their answer to the last question of this application.
They must be skilled and able to plan many different kinds of marketing activities. They’ll have the ability to balance multiple ongoing projects on a daily basis, the ability to change priorities quickly, and the ability to work well under pressure (e.g., campaigns, launches, and other time-sensitive projects may throw last-minute or unforeseeable curveballs). They’ll have perseverance and patience when dealing with complicated matters and a curiosity in learning how and why things work. They’ll prioritize asking “should we do this?” over “could we do this?”
They’ll have affinity and appreciation for the incredibly necessary — and not at all “optional” — Oxford comma (viva la Elements of Style!) And ideally have experience with product development, hardware/software UX, and/or customer support (but it’s not a requirement).
We aren’t looking to hire a Director of Marketing who sees their primary role as simply telling others what to figure out and watching presentations from staff from afar, abstracting themselves from the actual work.
This position’s success is all about day-to-day execution. In addition to assembling a plan, strategy, or process, they’ll need to actively make sure things are moving forward and getting done on a daily and weekly basis, and roll up their sleeves to ensure that happens.
What Our Hiring Process Looks Like
Aside from an initial phone screen and final interview, we’ve eliminated the annoying process of “let’s have a million different calls with a million different people to say the same million things” and developed an asynchronous written “interview kit” — it interactively lets us get to know you better and lets you get to know us better.
How it Works:
- You submit your resume and answers to the application questions (yes, we read them in their entirety)
- Those selected to move forward will have a 20-minute chat/phone screen with a senior person at the company
- Those who are then chosen to move forward will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement and then offered a written “interview kit.” We like to be transparent about who we are and what we’re about, so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you to pursue a position with us
- Those who move forward from there will have a video call interview with our executive team as part of a review of final candidates.
- That’s it — if you get past all those steps and are selected for the position, you’ll get a job offer, you’ll (hopefully) accept, and 🎉 we’ll do great things together!
We know it’s a long, multi-step process — and you probably wanted a job like yesterday — but it’s incredibly important that this is a great fit for both of us. Being a team isn’t just a one way street of “we choose you” — you also have to choose us.
