Your career is a long-term investment that grows and evolves with time.
Wealthsimple aims to help everyone reach financial freedom by redefining how people manage their money. Through smart, modern technology, we make financial services—often complex, unclear, and costly—simple, transparent, and affordable. We’re Canada’s largest fintech company, trusted by over 3 million users who collectively hold more than $100 billion with us.
Our teams ship quickly and make real impact with bold ideas. We’re looking for talented, collaborative, humble people who value simplicity and want to contribute to inclusive, high-performing teams where everyone can do their best work.
About the team
TLDR is Canada’s most widely read business newsletter, with 4.5 million subscribers. Every week, it breaks down the biggest stories in business, finance, and the world of money, offering clear summaries and sharp analysis. Our coverage ranges widely—we’ve explored topics like how cognitive biases lead to bad trades, ambitious solutions to Canada’s housing shortage, and why gold prices are climbing. You can browse the entire archive online.
In 2024, TLDR became the first Canadian newsletter to win a Webby Award, surpassing CNN, Scott Galloway’s No Mercy / No Malice, and The Hustle in the Best Business, News & Tech category.
TLDR is produced by Wealthsimple Media, the independent editorial division of Wealthsimple. The team has also launched other editorial brands, including Wealthsimple Magazine and the TLDR Podcast. We’ve featured essays from acclaimed writers like David Sedaris, Karen Russell, Rembert Browne, and Nico Walker, and interviewed notable figures such as Anthony Bourdain, Kim Kardashian, Matty Matheson, Cathie Wood, and Pulitzer Prize winner Matthew Desmond.
About the role
Wealthsimple Media is hiring a senior news writer to help lead TLDR. We want someone who can take ownership of the newsletter’s voice, make it distinctively their own, and is eager to build a personal brand through our large platform—similar to what Andrew Ross Sorkin achieved with DealBook. You don’t need to be the next Sorkin, but we want someone capable of attracting and growing an audience.
The TLDR team is committed to producing the most engaging, informative, entertaining, and accurate money content anywhere. The senior news writer must bring ambition, intelligence, and strong writing skills to elevate the newsletter and help expand the TLDR brand.
We’re looking for a very specific type of journalist. Deep knowledge of business or finance is helpful but not essential. What *is* essential: strong reporting, endless curiosity, high energy, and the ability to write with wit, clarity, and personality. We want someone genuinely fascinated by money and the world, excited to share the most compelling ideas they find in a fun, readable way.
This person should be something of a polymath—equally comfortable analyzing major front-page stories, breaking down fintwit trends, explaining complex charts about topics like AI’s circular deals, or interviewing savvy traders about the housing market. A healthy degree of journalistic skepticism is important, too.
Key responsibilities and strengths:
• 5+ years in an editorial role at a media outlet or writing position at a financial institution
• Serve as lead writer for TLDR and Wealthsimple Magazine
• Help manage the newsletter from idea to publication, including reporting, writing, gathering ideas, and working with editors, researchers, and fact-checkers
• Pitch original stories and develop new editorial franchises
• Strong research and reporting abilities, with a close eye on daily news
• Excellent editorial judgment and news instincts
• Awareness of pop culture, politics, markets, and technology
• Ability to hustle—proactively finding stories others overlook
• Creativity to help push the newsletter into new territory
One more thing: Since TLDR is published Monday mornings, the writer will need to work a bit on Sundays—usually to address late-stage fact checks or proof the final version. Most of this can be done from a phone, though occasionally a laptop is needed. The team is large enough to provide weekend coverage when you’re unavailable. Sunday hours can be offset with time off during the week. We respect that everyone has a life outside of work.
