It’s been 6 months since Hurricane Helene left devastation across many southern states, including the Carolinas we call home. In the aftermath of the storm, our teams from across the company rallied together to provide much-needed supplies, donations, and emotional support for the impacted communities. In Asheville, NC, Belk created a pop-up shop to provide free items to the associates who’d lost so much. “It’s important that people know they’re cared for, and they work for a company that supports them through all phases of their life,” said Kimberly J., Asheville Store Manager. We’re proud to be a part of company that takes care of each other and the communities we serve! #belk #belkgives #community
About us
Charlotte-based Belk, Inc., a privately-owned department store, began when William Henry Belk opened his first store in 1888 with his brother, Dr. John Belk, joining as a partner. What started as two brothers in business has now grown into a legacy of selling great products at great prices, treating customers like family, and giving back to the community. Throughout the years, we’ve changed and grown in so many ways. We’ve added exciting products, adapted the way we work, and made it easier to shop with new technology and services. Today, Belk serves customers at nearly 300 Belk stores in 16 Southeastern states, at belk.com, and through the mobile app.

Spreading joy throughout our communities was a major theme for Belk associates this holiday season. Sixty members from our corporate office in Charlotte, NC volunteered in this year’s “Joy to the Carolinas” at Bank of America Stadium. The yearly event, hosted by The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation and the Carolina Panthers invited over 700 underserved youth to experience the evening. The local students in attendance were from regional Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA programs throughout the Carolinas. Attendees went through several festively decorated areas in the stadium where they received toys, shoes, and coats. Belk volunteers gave out hats, gloves, and our favorite cuddly companion of the holidays, Belkie Bear. The children were also served a festive holiday meal that was served to them by Panthers players and staff. The field even had the entire fleet of Panthers’ inflatables, which created a fun fan fest with bounce houses, slides, and a giant snow globe. We’re thrilled to have been a partner for this wonderful event and thank all the associates who joined us to share the joy with these deserving children. #belk #community #belkgives

Supporting our local communities is at the heart of our organization and we love supporting causes that are important to our associates. We recently partnered with the Young Black Leadership Alliance (YBLA) in our hometown of Charlotte, NC, to support their 2024 Toy Drive and Teacher Appreciation event. As part of the event, we also brought along 150 Belkie bears to donate to these wonderful local children! Through this donation drive, the YBLA was ultimately able to support over 6,000 children and 900 school staff members this year. "Thank you for making a difference, sharing in the joy of giving, and joining us in developing young Black leaders who positively impact the community," said Ronny Reddig, YBLA Development and Service Specialist. "Together, we’ve made this holiday season brighter for so many!" Thank you to all of our associates who participated in this worthwhile cause! #belk #belkgives #community

We love seeing the ways our store teams support local communities, especially during the holidays. Our Westminster, MD store team sponsored a thoughtful (and clever!) holiday toy and charity drive to benefit areas of NC impacted by Hurricane Helene. Thanks to their shared town name, our store team felt a connection to Westminster, NC, in Rutherford County -- one of the areas hit hardest by the storm. The store partnered with Dr. Donald Raybush, a former professor of special education at McDaniel College and co-founder of the Target Community & Educational Services, to host the "Westminster, MD to Westminster, NC" Donation Drive. During November, the Westminster, MD store accepted donations of items (many purchased in-store) and monetary contributions. Belk also donated $1,000 to spend in-store for clothing and gifting items for families. The donations were picked up at the beginning of December and distributed to impacted communities including Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, and Swannanoa, NC. In total, the store raised an impressive $9,000 in monetary donations with more to come when the Townmall of Westminster donates its collection from the wishing wells at the end of the holiday season. They’re also donating 12 bikes and over 100 boxes filled with supplies, including toys, gifts, clothing, pet supplies, and many other items families will need as they rebuild. Thank you to the Westminster store team, Dr. Donald Raybush, and all the associates and community partners who helped make this season a bit brighter for families in need! #belk #belkgives #community

Our customers loved the Holiday Open House event we recently hosted in all Belk stores. The afternoon included fun activities like letters to Santa, live music, hot cocoa bars, gift wrapping with donations to charity, and our beloved teddy bear, Belkie. Several of our stores even had a special visit from Santa himself along with a live holiday wreath gift with purchase. Store associates loved getting the chance to spread holiday cheer while helping our customers find the perfect gifts for everyone on their lists. Here are some things our customers had to say about the event: "Everyone was so nice and cheerful. Santa and Belkie bear walking around greeting everyone was a nice touch and added to the holiday shopping experience." "I called my moms' group and told them to grab their kids and get to Belk to see Santa!" "Belk put me in the Christmas spirit, and I shopped longer than I planned!" "No other stores are making shopping this festive and fun!" Thank you to all the associates who helped make the season magical for our customers during the Holiday Open House! ✨🎄🎁✨

Our store team in Kinston, NC, recently hosted a fundraising "Sip & Shop" event where a portion of the sales benefitted a local nonprofit near and dear to their hearts, the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Foundation. It’s an independent charitable corporation that supports UNC Lenoir Health Care for the citizens of Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties in North Carolina. Over 100 people attended the festive event, where several hospital physicians took the stage to model both casual and formal holiday looks. Belk provided the DJ, gift bags for the models, and gift card grand prizes for attendees while the Hospital Foundation provided the food and wine. Thanks to the Kinston team for hosting this fabulous event and for taking care of those who do so much for their community! #belk #community #belkgives

One of the foundations of Belk’s culture is the proud history of supporting our communities. It’s been a part of our DNA ever since our doors first opened 136 years ago. Recently, associates from our Belk Haywood store in Greenville, SC, and members from our RESTORE Business Resource Group, donated $5,000 to the Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health. The Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health is a state-of-the-art center that provides advanced breast imaging technology and life-saving screenings for women in the Greenville, SC community. It is accredited by the National Accreditation for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) as a Breast Center of Excellence1234. The organization provides free mobile screenings as they work to identify individuals within the community who may have breast disease. Much of this uninsured and underinsured population would most likely not have access to breast health care without the mobile mammography program. Thank you to our associates who helped support this worthwhile organization in the Greenville community!

We once again were proud to partner with WCNC Charlotte for their Magical Toy Drive this year; an event that collects new and unwrapped toys for The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. The NBC-TV affiliate’s news team broadcasted live throughout the day from our Pineville, NC store’s parking lot as we helped fill two collection trucks full of toys that will help give local children a magical holiday! The Salvation Army is one of our national charitable partners at Belk, and our associates look forward to collecting toys for this event in our Charlotte area stores throughout the holidays. We loved seeing members of our Charlotte, NC community come out in droves to help. During the in-person collection event, we collected 3,841 new toys that The Salvation Army will help distribute to local families. Our very own Jared T. and Brittany M. did one of the live news segments that morning talking about how we support The Salvation Army as they showed off this year’s adorable Belkie bear. We set a one-day collection record for the event, but if you would still like to help us support The Salvation Army, there’s still time to do so! We encourage you to donate at any Belk or Belk Outlet register until December 24, 2024, and $1 from every 2024 Belkie bear sold this holiday will also be donated to The Salvation Army. Thank you to everyone in the Charlotte area who donated to this year’s Magical Toy Drive along with those who made donations to The Salvation Army either at our registers or online. #belk #givingseason #belkgives #magicaltoydrive
