Google recently announced a key update to Google Tag Manager (GTM) that could impact how your Google Ads and Floodlight event tags fire. Starting April 10, 2025, GTM will automatically load the Google Tag library for event tags that don’t have a corresponding Google Tag. While this helps standardize tracking, it also introduces potential challenges—especially if you rely on GTM’s flexibility for tag firing. At Napkyn, we believe data integrity and control are critical. That’s why we strongly recommend manually adding Google Tags for each destination ID. This ensures: ✅ Full visibility into what’s loading on your site ✅ Better debugging and auditing capabilities ✅ Prevention of event delays due to auto-loading behavior This change does not impact GA4 tags, but it does mean that Google Ads and Floodlight event tracking may behave differently if left unmanaged. FAQs: What You Need to Know ❓ Does this impact GA4 tags? No, this update only affects Google Ads and Floodlight event tags. GA4 configurations remain unchanged. ❓What if I already have a Google Tag in GTM? Each destination ID (e.g., Google Ads, Floodlight) needs its own Google Tag. If you only have one, you may need to update your setup. ❓Will GTM automatically create Google Tags for me? If you click “Fix” in GTM, it will add the necessary tags, but we recommend manually adding them to maintain control. ❓Will this impact data collection before user consent? No. The Google Tag will only load based on your existing Consent Mode settings. ❗ What’s Napkyn’s recommendation? We advise manually setting up Google Tags for each destination ID to avoid auto-loading issues and ensure seamless event tracking.
