Remember Black Wall Street? Check out the details of this lawsuit filed against Ben Smith, SEMAFOR, and BuzzFeed, by OZY Media. It was met with an indictment of @CarlosWatson and Ozy, fueled by Ben Smith's The New York Times witchhunt. In the fall of 2019, as OZY began to take off, Ben Smith and his colleagues tried and failed to buy Ozy at BuzzFeed -- offering $125M, then $170M, then $225M, then $250M and ultimately $300M. When his boss (CEO Jonah Peretti) offered to make Carlos the President of BuzzFeed and hence Ben's boss, Ben quit abruptly after 8.5 years and ultimately moved to the The New York Times. There, 18 months later in September 2021, with OZY fully ascending and on the verge of surpassing BuzzFeed (which Ben still had stock options in), a conflicted Smith wrote a series of hit pieces that nearly took OZY Media under. Ozy was able to keep the company going and rebuilt it through late 2021, all of 2022 and into early 2023-- launching fresh new newsletters, tv shows, and podcasts and announcing our latest OZY Fest. They also won new business with Coke, DoorDash, P&G, IPG and others. They were on the verge of a meaningful comeback when federal prosecutors on the other side of the country -- in Brooklyn where Smith and BuzzFeed are based rather than in CA where Ozy had offices -- indicted Carlos and the company (a rarity -- even Theranos, Enron and FTX were never indicted). Carlos' name was smeared aggressively by the three prosecutors in the case and their office.  Read the filing here: https://lnkd.in/ebH7xxer Black Wall Street 2.0

Agreed. We need more Black people in leadership in media. But, we had that with Carlos Watson at OZY Media. But, Ben Smith, when he was at the The New York Times, decided to go after Ozy, bcuz Carlos wouldn't sell the company to BuzzFeed for $300 million (where Ben had stock).
