It was a couple of weeks ago that we launched Penpot 2.0. In a few days more than 60,000 designers and developers joined. That's more than 600,000 designers and developers in a couple of years. And for my #growth friends - yes, a significant percentage of these come from users that invite them to collaborate. I'm a sucker for research, so here's what we learned about why all these folks are joining: - Some joined because they were looking for a free design tool 🤑 - Others joined because they wanted a design tool that would set them free - free from aggressive sales, and free from being locked in to a tool that would held them and their work hostage 🔓 - And there's also a folks looking to self-host Penpot as they want to have full control of their data 🤐 But this does not end here. Should I hire in-house or should I outsource❓ I get this question a lot. Here’s just one way to look at it: In-House Dev Team is + Great for deep collaboration and long-term projects. + You get full control of the team. + They align with your vision. But… - It's expensive. - Salaries, benefits, and compliance. It all adds up. Outsourcing on the other side + It’s flexible and fast. + You can scale up or down as needed. + And access global talent. But… - Risks include communication gaps. - And less control. What’s the best choice? For startups or short-term needs: ✔️ Outsourcing is often smarter. For long-term growth: ✔️ Building an in-house team works best. In the end... It depends on your goals, strategy and budget. Dear product owners, Please stop treating marketing channels as release notes. Never use: ❌ blog articles ❌ community posts ❌ social media updates ❌ mass email blasts ❌ and especially webinars or live events for the only purpose of letting people know you've just pushed another piece of code in production. Two reasons: 1️⃣ No one cares except yourself. Such messages go unnoticed by customers and drive your marketing team nuts 🤯 2️⃣ By doing this, you're trying to hammer a nail with a pasta slicer 🍝 (which isn't an effective way to use a tool) Work closely with your marketers before the release to add real value: 💡 explain why it's essential and what's in it for your customers, 💡 show how to use the new feature, 💡 connect it to your broader strategic vision. (We have to talk if you don't have any.) To increase adoption, you're better off with: ✔️ in-product communication, ✔️ segmenting your customer base to find early adopters with the best fit and start from there, ✔️ finding direct feature requests through support, communities, or public bug trackers, ✔️ or even gradual rollouts if technically possible. Most developers are in trouble! StackBlitz's latest AI product Bolt is the closest we have seen to making 80%+ of developers obsolete. With one prompt it's able to build out a simple solution including all the files needed for deployment. Still error-prone on the first attempt but was able to fix the bugs automatically and after a few attempts, it worked. What does this mean? 1. As an engineer what matters is not the coding but the more complex and higher-level topics like architecture, security, tooling and user experience. 2. You no longer need a large technical team. 3. Today, I attended an insightful presentation on the Vercel project by Petr Glaser 🤖, which highlighted a significant shift towards #PaaS solutions over traditional #devops roles. Vercel simplifies the deployment process by directly integrating with GitHub, automatically building from repositories as long as they're JavaScript-compatible. It offers dynamic preview environments for each branch, streamlines production setups, and incorporates essential observability tools. Notably, Vercel also supports services like #Postgresql, maintaining simplicity with basic yet effective options. The presentation addressed common frustrations with the #AWS web console, suggesting that platforms like Vercel are becoming essential for enhancing dev experience and efficiency in deploying apps on AWS. This approach poses an interesting dilemma: it's undoubtedly efficient and developer-friendly for smaller projects, providing immediate functionality. However, for larger, more complex projects, the lack of extensive customization might be a limitation. This leads to a broader question for the tech community: At what point does the convenience of a PaaS platform like Vercel become a trade-off for control and customization? And, would you advocate for using your company’s platform if your team is proficient in JavaScript and prefers simplicity over operational control? Okay, I'm taking the plunge... I've decided to proceed with my newest project (without dropping the other ones) - and that is a blog/newsletter called "A Common-Sense Guide to AI"! And the good news is that it's not only for software devs; it's for *everyone*. https://lnkd.in/etZNfMMk In my first post, I describe what this blog is all about - so I'll just copy and paste the post right here: AI can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. In the past two years or so, a deluge of news and info about Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been gushing forth from the media, the Internet, and the person sitting next to you on the bus. From what you’ve likely heard, AI sounds like some sci-fi futuristic reality that has suddenly come to be. The sentiment that the “future has arrived” can be both exciting and, well, scary. On the exciting side, we can ask, “What amazing new things can we accomplish with AI?” On a smaller scale, we wonder if AI can make our lives at least slightly easier, or make our work somewhat more productive. On the scary side, we want to know if AI will take over the world. Or even if AI isn’t as insidious as that, can it take over my job? Hype Vs. Reality Another confusing about AI is that on one hand, there’s a lot of hype around it. “Nothing else besides AI is going to matter soon,” they say. On the other hand, there are plenty of naysayers and those who claim that the whole AI thing is just one big bubble that’s about to pop. So, which is true? The powerful but unreliable tool Tech blogger Simon Willison wrote something that struck a chord with me. He describes that the key skills of using language-based AI tools “is learning to work with tech that is both inherently unreliable and incredibly powerful at the same time. This is a decidedly non-obvious skill to acquire! There is so much space for helpful education content here.” I’ve already seen firsthand how real value can be derived from AI, and how certain jobs and tasks are changing based on AI’s impact. My goal, then, is to dig out the gems from the mine - and demonstrate how you can stay ahead of the curve and get tangible value from AI. At the same time, I will bust certain myths and hype - and let you know which parts of AI you can ignore (for now, at least). Who am I? I’m Jay Wengrow, an educator and software engineer. I’m the author of the book series "A Common-Sense Guide to Data Structures and Algorithms" as well as the founder of the Actualize coding school. I do not have a doctorate in machine learning or artificial intelligence. However, my strengths are in my ability to learn things deeply and communicate complex concepts in a way that is easy for others to understand.
