Your career is a long‑term investment that grows and evolves over time.

Wealthsimple’s mission is to help everyone achieve financial freedom by redefining how people manage their money. With modern, intelligent technology, we make financial services — often complex, confusing, and expensive — simple, transparent, and accessible. We are Canada’s largest fintech company, trusted by more than 3 million users who collectively hold over $100 billion with us.

Our teams move quickly and create real impact with bold ideas. We look for talented, collaborative, humble people who value simplicity and want to contribute to inclusive, high‑performing teams where everyone can do their best work.

About the team
TLDR is Canada’s most‑read business newsletter, with 4.5 million subscribers. Every week, it breaks down the biggest stories in business, finance, and the world of money, offering clear summaries and sharp analysis. Our coverage is wide‑ranging — we’ve tackled topics like how cognitive biases lead to bad investments, ambitious solutions to Canada’s housing crisis, and why gold prices are rising. The full archive is available online.

In 2024, TLDR became the first Canadian newsletter to win a Webby Award, beating CNN, Scott Galloway’s No Mercy / No Malice, and The Hustle in the Best Business, News & Technology Newsletter category.

TLDR is produced by Wealthsimple Media, the independent editorial arm of Wealthsimple. The team has also launched other editorial brands, including Wealthsimple Magazine and the TLDR Podcast. We’ve published work from acclaimed writers like David Sedaris, Karen Russell, Rembert Browne, and Nico Walker, and interviewed notable figures such as Anthony Bourdain, Kim Kardashian, Matty Matheson, Cathie Wood, and Pulitzer winner Matthew Desmond.

About the role
Wealthsimple Media is hiring a senior news writer to help lead TLDR. We want someone who embodies the voice of the newsletter, gives it a distinct personality, and is excited to build their own personal brand through our large platform — similar to what Andrew Ross Sorkin did with DealBook. You don’t have to be the next Sorkin, but we want someone who can attract and grow an audience.

The TLDR team is committed to producing the most engaging, informative, entertaining, and accurate content about money. The senior writer should bring ambition, insight, and strong writing skills to elevate the newsletter and help expand the TLDR brand.

We’re looking for a very specific type of journalist. Deep knowledge of business or finance is helpful but not required. What *is* required: strong reporting, relentless curiosity, high energy, and the ability to write with clarity, humor, and personality. We want someone genuinely interested in money and the world, excited to share the most interesting ideas they find in a light and accessible way.

This person should be something of a polymath — equally comfortable analyzing major headlines, unpacking fintwit trends, explaining complex charts on topics like AI circular‑deal structures, or interviewing seasoned traders about the real estate market. A healthy dose of journalistic skepticism is also important.

Key responsibilities and qualifications:
• Over 5 years in an editorial role at a media outlet or a writing role at a financial institution
• Serve as the primary writer for TLDR and Wealthsimple Magazine
• Help manage the newsletter from concept to publication, including reporting, writing, brainstorming, and collaborating with editors, researchers, and fact‑checkers
• Pitch original stories and develop new editorial series
• Strong research and reporting skills, with constant attention to the news cycle
• Excellent editorial judgment and news instinct
• Knowledge of pop culture, politics, markets, and technology
• Ability to actively seek out stories — finding angles others overlook
• Creativity to take the newsletter into new territory

One important note: because TLDR is published on Monday mornings, the writer will need to work a bit on Sundays — usually to finalize fact‑checking or review the final draft. Most of this can be done on a phone, though a laptop may be needed at times. The team is large enough to provide weekend coverage when you’re unavailable. Sunday hours can be offset with time off during the week. We respect that everyone has a life outside of work.
